Discussion Questions

Start Talking

  • What is the biggest takeaway you have had so far in this series?

  • Has learning about the “unholy trinity”- the world, the flesh, the devil- opened your eyes to the reasons why some things may be happening in your life?

  • Has this series helped you feel equipped to fight against the unholy trinity?

Read This

  • Read Matthew 4: 1-11

    • Re-read verses 1-2, after fasting for forty days and nights does it seem that Jesus is facing Satan from a position of weakness or a position of strength?

    • How does it reframe this passage if you view it as a position of strength?

    • Last week Sean talked about how Jesus responded with Scripture to the devil’s temptations. Cross-reference Jesus’ responses and find the original Scripture that He is referencing. (Hint: most Bibles have the cross-reference noted)

  • Read Galatians 6:8

    • What does this verse say we will reap if we sow to the flesh?

    • What does this verse say we will reap if we sow to the Spirit?

  • Read John 8:31-32

    • According to these verses, what do we need to do for the truth to set us free?

What Now

  • Have you ever fasted before? For Lent? For a diet?

    • Was your fast for spiritual reasons or for physical reasons?

    • Did you get the desired results from your fast?

    • What are some reasons your fast worked or didn’t work for you?

  • Fasting increases our spiritual attention.

    • What are you distracted by right now in life that is keeping you from being spiritually attentive?

    • How can removing those distractions help you focus on what you need to address spiritually in your life?

  • Fasting increases our spiritual hunger.

    • Do you crave time with the Lord?

    • Do you desire to read your Bible more?

    • Do you hunger to see God show up more in your life and your families lives?

  • Take some time to come up with a plan and ways you encourage each other as we fast for the purpose of seeking God and His purposes in our lives.

"Like solitude and silence, fasting is not done to impress God or merit favor, nor because there is anything wrong with food. Rather, it is done that we may consciously experience the direct sustenance of God to our body and our whole person. We are using the keys to access the kingdom." - Willard
