The word "Advent" may not be one we use often, but it simply means the coming or arrival of something significant. This season holds special meaning for a few important reasons. First, it reminds us that the prophecies about the Messiah were fulfilled in the birth and life of Jesus. Second, Advent gives us a chance to reflect on who Jesus is—both as the Savior who came into the world and as the living Lord who is with us today. Lastly, Advent points us toward the future, reminding us of His promised return.
The practice of Advent might not be something you’ve experienced deeply before. Early churches often observed this season with fasting and reflection on the Incarnation, but for many of us, Advent memories might be more about fun calendars—like the chocolate or Lego Advent calendars we looked forward to each year! There’s usually not a lot of fasting involved, but plenty of feasting and celebrations. While we’re not asking you to fast, we do encourage you to take some time for intentional reflection.
As part of our Advent journey, we’ll also be diving deeper into the Gospel of Luke, where the story of Jesus’ birth and life is carefully told. To help set the stage, we encourage you to watch The Bible Project’s video on the Gospel of Luke. This video gives a great overview of Luke’s account, which will be the foundation of our daily reflections.
Over the next 23 days, join us as we explore who Jesus is, how He came into the world, and what that means for us now. Set aside 15 to 20 minutes each day to read, reflect, and pray, centering yourself on the true meaning of the season—the coming of Jesus.
