When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”
— Luke 2:22-24 (NIV)
In Luke 2:22-24, we see Mary and Joseph fulfilling the requirements of the Law by bringing Jesus to the temple for purification and consecration. This was not just a formality; it was an act of obedience to the law of Moses, acknowledging that Jesus, even as a baby, belonged to God. Their actions, while seemingly small or routine, were an important part of God's greater plan. By taking these steps, Mary and Joseph demonstrated their deep faithfulness and reverence for God’s instructions.
Though the family was in Bethlehem for the census and likely facing many challenges, they did not neglect these important duties. They followed through with what God had asked of them, even in the smallest of details. This teaches us that obedience to God is not always about grand gestures or big decisions. Sometimes, it’s about being faithful in the everyday tasks, even those that seem ordinary or insignificant. God delights in our obedience, not just in the big moments but also in the quiet, consistent choices we make to honor Him.
The offering they made—“a pair of doves or two young pigeons”—was a sacrifice for those who could not afford a lamb, which shows God’s grace in meeting people where they were. God sees our hearts and knows our circumstances. Just as He made a way for Mary and Joseph, He will always provide what we need to walk in obedience.
This Advent season, let us reflect on how we can honor God in the small, everyday moments of our lives. What areas is God calling you to act in obedience, even when it feels like just another routine? May we remember that in every step of faith, whether big or small, we are participating in His larger story of grace.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the example of Mary and Joseph, who were faithful in the small acts of obedience. Help me to honor You in the details of my life, even when they feel ordinary or routine. May my heart be open to Your guidance, and may I walk in faithfulness, knowing that You are with me in every step. Amen.
